They opened their campaign with a 1-0 win away at Nottingham Forest, while Newcastle’s first league outing ended in frustration as Liverpool snatched a 2-2 draw with a stoppage-time penalty. The Magpies did at least get themselves into the next round of the League Cup with a 3-2 comeback against West Brom.
