Match summary

On paper, this had all the ingredients of a Manchester City goal-fest. Instead, Coventry made City work surprisingly hard for every inch.

City dominated the early stages and eventually found their breakthrough when Haaland thundered a header beyond Carl Rushworth. Enzo Fernández, making his City debut, played a key role in the move, feeding Antoine Semenyo before the winger delivered the decisive cross.

But Coventry refused to simply sit back and admire the view.

Frank Lampard’s side grew into the game and began asking serious questions of City’s defence. Gianluigi Donnarumma was forced into several important saves, including a late stop from Ellis Simms that could have dramatically changed the ending.

City had opportunities to put the game beyond doubt, but couldn’t find that second goal. Coventry kept pushing right until the final whistle, leaving the home side with three points but perhaps fewer fingernails than they would have liked.

And somewhere, FPL managers who captained Haaland were probably staring at the screen wondering where the other four goals were. A 300th club goal is impressive. A 1-0 scoreline when you own half of City’s attack? Less so.
