Match preview
St James’ Park gets a visit from the Tigers, and Hull City will have no intention of arriving quietly. Newcastle have one of English football’s most intimidating home crowds behind them, but Hull have already shown they can bite. It is Newcastle’s experience and expectation against a newly promoted side playing with nothing to lose. The game kicks off at 3pm on Saturday 19 September.
Recent form
Newcastle have had a lively start, to put it mildly. Their opening league game ended 2-2 with Liverpool after they twice surrendered the lead, while Hull have already picked up points and attention since returning to the Premier League. The Tigers will arrive believing this is another chance to upset the established order
Head-to-head
Hull have been a bit of a nuisance for Newcastle in the past. The Tigers famously won 2-1 at St James’ Park in 2008 and pulled off another 3-2 victory there in 2013. The most recent Premier League meeting, however, saw Newcastle win 3-0
Why fans are watching
Newcastle have the noise. Hull have the nerve. The Magpies will expect three points in front of a packed St James’ Park, but Hull have already discovered that being the underdog can be a rather enjoyable position. Can the Tigers silence the Toon Army, or will Newcastle send Hull back south with a few bite marks of their own? Who does the world WANT to win?
